Huffington Post interviews Guy Diehl

Bay Area still life master Guy Diehl, who has been publishing prints and tapestries with Magnolia since the late 1980s, was recently interviewed by Huffington Post arts blogger John Seed on the occasion of his upcoming show at Dolby Chadwick Gallery in San Francisco.

In this in-depth conversation, Diehl discusses his background, becoming an artist as a means to harness his dyslexia as a strength, and the diverse intents behind his work in various media from painting, printmaking, and mixed-media multiples to murals and tapestries.

New Media Combinations at Berkeley Art Center

Magnolia directors Donald and Era Farnsworth and longtime Magnolia collaborator Rupert Garcia are among the artists featured in "New Media Combinations: Traditional - Digital," opening September 6, 2013 at the Berkeley Art Center.

Other participating artists in this promising show, which "showcases compelling work by contemporary artists investigating multiple solutions to mine and combine the potential of traditional and digital technologies," include Kim Anno, Rebeca Bolinger, Lia Cook, Bella Feldman, Talia Green, Elisabeth Sher, and Jeannie O'Connor.

An opening reception will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, September 6th. Two weeks later, Rupert Garcia will hold a public dialogue with professor John Zarobell about "art, process, and the Bay Area's contemporary creative climate" on September 21st at 4 PM.

Artists in the show will also participate in a panel on October 26 where attendees will have more opportunities to hear about the inspiration and processes behind each work.

Regina Weinreich of the Huffington Post and Amanda Gordon of Bloomberg News attended a special preview of Chuck Close's current show at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Friday night.

The exhibition was also attended by friends including Lou Reed, Robert Storr, Eric Fischl, April Gornik, Alec Baldwin, and Sienna Shields. Weinreich recalls that:

Sienna, one of Chuck Close's recent subjects, her head larger than life on Hahnemuhle rag paper, told me Chuck likes to tell the story of James Turrell spinning him around in his chair to get the full effect of his neon light art in the reconfigured Guggenheim Museum's rotunda.

New tapestry editions by Chuck Close published by Magnolia Editions, as well as a suite of watercolor prints printed at Magnolia, will be exhibited in "Chuck Close: Recent Works" at Guild Hall in East Hampton, New York.

The show will kick off with a conversation between the artist and Robert Storr on Saturday, August 10 from 3-4 pm; an opening reception from 4-6 pm will follow. Both the talk and the opening are free for Guild Hall members.

Meanwhile, here on the West Coast, San Francisco's venerable Modernism gallery will mount an exhibition of tapestries published by Magnolia from a diverse group of artists including Kiki Smith, Deborah Oropallo, Donald & Era Farnsworth, Chester Arnold, Doug Hall, Mel Ramos, and Guy Diehl.

Those in the New York area this summer will have the opportunity to see several brand new Magnolia Editions publications by Chuck Close at Guild Hall in East Hampton:

In our showcase exhibition of the summer season, we will present recent paintings, prints and tapestries by Chuck Close. Close is noted for his highly inventive techniques used to paint the human face [...] His first retrospective was in 1981 at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and his work is found in numerous museum and private collections worldwide. Chuck Close was the recipient of the 1995 Guild Hall Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award Winner in the Visual Arts. He had a one person exhibition of his large-scale Polaroid photographs, "Chuck Close Up Close" at Guild Hall in 1991. He has been a part-time resident of the East End for more than 40 years.

This show, on view from August 10 through October 14, 2013, will kick off with a Summer Gala to benefit Guild Hall on August 9:
